Fashion II The Lady in the Green Dress

    Have you seen "Atonement"?

It was the film adaptation of a novel by Ian McEwan, that bagged 7 Oscars in the 80th Academy Awards and 2 in the 61st British Academy Film Awards.

The story is seen through the eyes of Briony Tallis, who is a novellist, and the love affair between her sister Cecilia and young man Robbie. All that entails afterward was the war and what became of her sister and Robbie after she sends Robbie off to war after discovering them in the library.

Apart from the moving story ( I suggest you all watch the film!) one of the most memorable images I conjured from my mind would be Cecilia's beautiful emerald green dress.

It hung perfectly on her body and emphasized the curves at all the right places (without looking the least bit vulgar considering its satin). I adore the rich green color of the dress, its so vivid that throughout the whole movie the dress symbolizes both the beauty and the ugly in envy. For Briony was envious of her sister, because she had a childish crush on Robbie and could not deny her sister was a goddess in looks, thus, the dress is colored so.

I will not consider this a costume, even though it is I shall put it in the costume category when I cover the movie, because of the beautiful shape and the classic-sexy look. Besides, women would wear this at the present time.

TIME even named the piece as one of the movies' most-loved costumes.

The design is quite simple, but the exposed back, the train, the rich color and the sensous fabric balance it out.

I just can't take my eyes off the dress

Art II Tattoo Art in Japan

"One day I will get a tattoo"

This I would really want, not because its a trend nowadays that everyone wants one to look cool, but because I've always been thinking about it. I find tattoos, most if not all, very meaningful and at the same time an inkling of who you really are.

I came upon the japanese tattoos for research for my portfolio and I was in awe of all the wonderful images that were inked on people's bodies. They aren't the tattoos that follow chinese symbols and latin saying, they're more images that are similar to the ukiyo or japanese woodblock prints.

I recall seeing one of my schoolmates, though I was not aquainted with him, who had tattoos on his left arm that seemed to go all the way to his shoulder. The design were waves like "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa".

What I shall be posting here are the more elaborate ones, so you can see how intricate and detailed their inking is.

The Japanese began tattooing all the way back in the 17th Century were outcast and bandits were the only ones who wore them. They would tattoo their faces to identify them. Later on the higher classes caught on with the art of tattooing their bodies and got them as well. And then tattoos became illegal for a time, save for the Yakuzas who wore tattoos freely and it became a symbol of their rebellious stand against the government. Presently, there are no rules bound to those who want to get a tattoo, save for not being permitted entry in public baths, and are given artistic freedom by society.

Warning: Please be aware that the images are purely for art's sake.

    Back Tattoos

I like how each of the backs create a world in itself by housing a tattoos story. I love the different styles and ways they went about in designing the tattoo. The intricate lines and detail can be easily seen since the back is "flat" in terms of looking at the canvas.

    Bodice Tattoos

This type is more popular amongst women for the design and visual aesthetic. These tattoos are my favorite because they are located in the areas that women have their curves, thus, it emphasizes the womanly figure. The interesting thing about this is that it seems to crawl on the body, making it more dynamic.

    Sleeves / Arm Tattoos

The more popular preference for both sexes. Men would have the sleeve extending to their chests and back, while women have it extend to their shoulders and backs. This type of tattoo is harder to conceal since the arms are the most visible part of the body when clothing is concerned. But for someone bold then it shouldn't pose any problems

    Simpler Tattoos

Though There are many variations in design due to personal preference, there are similarities in the colors, the use of fluid lines and character.

    I hope you enjoyed!

Costume II White Hope

I will be posting an article on the dance of Twitch and Kerrington after this, but I just can't help but gush about Kerrington's costume here.

They danced the Viennese Waltz and the choreographers dedicated it to their daughter who is sick . She reacts to movement, particularly to dancing.

The message : there is always hope.

I love how they had used white for both the dancers and that they were both barefoot as well, it gave a more organic feel to the dance. I really liked the cut of Kerrington's dress as well. It's an asymmetrical dress that doesn't meet at the right side seam. I found this particularly interesting because what held the dress together, and made sure nothing peeks out of the airy dress, was the jeweled skin toned shorts she wore. Up close you could see it, but from afar it looks as if her dress was moving around her body as she danced. It added an extra something special to the performance.

    Here are some stills :)

Fashion II Couple Umbrella

Asians come up with the most unusual and witty things. I came across the couple umbrella, I saw in an episode of We Got Married, and I found it to be brilliant. How come no one has ever thought of it earlier?

You know how couples walk in the rain hand in hand and use only one umbrella? Sure they've covered their heads from the rain, but their bodies tend to get soaked by whatever that one umbrella is not covering. So this is the quirkiest umbrella I've seen.

It's a almost oval shaped umbrella that is perfect for walking in the rain with another person. It's big enough to shade one from the rain or shine completely AND it comes in a very handy compact size. Plus, its still visually pleasing.

These are the stills from the show I saw it on.

    The brand is Kikkerland.

It comes in pink, green, black, aqua and so on.

I just wanted to share this! :)

Dance II It's Hard to Fall

So You Think You Can Dance has had 7 seasons so far, and in each season there are very memorable performances.

Comfort was piared up with Adechike. Comfort was popularly known as a hip hop /street dancer as it is her forte, thus, making her distinct from the other female dancers who had appeared from the show. Personally, she is one of my favorites.

"Fallin" by Alicia Keys was the song they performed to. I found that the intensity of their dance paired with the precision of their movements gave the performance a stronger presence. And it definitely made it more memorable as well.

    Here's a clip!

    Enjoy!

Make Up II Shu Uemura Sakura Collection '11

I'm an avid fan of make up, all the types of make up, and I really enjoy looking at the ads of the Shu Uemura brand. They use bright colors and have unconventional packaging as well.

I scoured the site and I came upon their latest offer of the 'Rough Unlimited Sakura Collection' where they feature their lipsticks. I am in awe of sakura blossoms, especially the festival they have every year.

They take the inspiration of color from the way the sakura blossom changes with the time of day. At the earliest of hours it becomes a light pink and gradually morphs along with the day into the rosy mauve colors. They take Japan's most well-loved flower, that blooms only once a year, into hues that women can wear all year round.

I find that the colors work well with the Spring and Summer seasons especially since it would look fresh, youthful and light on the lips and won't be too difficult to match. The casing of the lipstick is also very unique, it comes in sakura pink. Very different from their usual transparent casing.

    Retail Price : $24.00 / 1040.00 PHP

It comes in 6 delightful shades!

PK319 Pastel Lavander Pink (Cool Toned)
PK356 Stylish Fuschia ( Cool Toned)
PK332 Modern Neutral Pink (Warm Toned)
PK339 Bright Pastel Pink (Cool Toned)
PK341 Elegant Medium Pink ( Warm Toned)
BG392 Peachy Pink ( Warm Toned)

Hopefully I can get one by this summer :)

Art II Suckerpunch Illustrations

When I had found the vintage posters I had also come across a series of illustrations of the "Suckerpunch" girls. There were two series that I came across...

    ALEX PARDEE

His works were totally whimsical in term of the colors that he had used as well as the witty extras drawn in. I like his use of color and the style of how he drew the girls.

I got a little freaked out thought with how gaunt some of the drawings look, but I guess that is how it's supposed to be to achieve the overall feel.

    ----

    JAIME TYNDALL

    He's quite popular.

His use of color isn't as whimsical as Pardee, instead his color palette is more reminiscient of the comic book style with the dark colors complimented with blacks and then contrasted by bright splashed of colors.

I wish he could have been able to do all the 6 characters.
