Your company's I.T. "professional" is obviously not keeping up with things, but that's all too common in the industry, unfortunately.

Still, I'd say that honestly, there are far more businesses out there staffed by I.T. people who do know what they're doing. Despite being a Mac user at home, I support a Windows PC network where I work. At this point in time, a switch to Macs really isn't feasible. It's not that we couldn't use newer Macs here. (Well, we couldn't before Intel Macs came out, because we rely on several proprietary software packages that are made for Windows only.) But reality is, Apple isn't really ready for "corporate America". They're inching ever closer to being there, but it's just not a market-segment they've concentrated on in the past.

It's easy for a Mac user to get "smug" about things, and say "Look how much easier I can do this!" with a task. But in the corporate world, there's usually more to it. They may be under an expensive service contract with an existing software package, so switching means flushing tens of thousands of dollars down the toilet for that pre-paid support plan. They often need to be able to make use of proprietary hardware or interfaces that just can't attach to a Mac. (Quite a few industrial controllers have been designed to plug into PCI or ISA slots on a PC, and they don't make a USB version!)

There's also a lot of interest in the ability to easily service one's own equipment, at least in smaller companies. Many I.T. departments like the generic, standard components found in most Windows PCs. If a power supply goes out, no problem. Grab any ATX supply from the shelf at CompUSA and drop it in. Back in business. Need a video card? They're sold everywhere. On a Mac, you're stuck waiting on a part from Apple themselves - and paying a premium for it.

I think this is the #1 reason people don't switch; They think that the difficulties of windows are how computing is supposed to be, namely, complicated, expensive, and time consuming.

I have to fight tooth and nail at my company to use a mac because, and I quote my "IT Professional"; "Macs are too expensive, they get too many viruses, and they're too hard to network and support". Now, granted, this woman isn't bright and was "promoted" to network admin from some receptionist job at some point, but this is how most companies think.

When she sits down at my mac to "fix it" (break something), she spends minutes looking for the complicated way of doing something instead of checking a box or pushing a button. The Principals of my company are the same. I'll do presentations in Keynote or make marketing movies or DVD's that the rest of the company loves, but since it's not supported on windows, the initiatives go nowhere. It's a mixture of ignorance and IT weasels looking to hold on to their jobs. If we had macs at work, she'd be out of a job and she knows it.

I hope Princeton's policies are platform agnostic, otherwise all the new mac users could find themselves in a difficult situation.

Bah. I can't even be bothered to read to the end of the thread about this nonsense. What's next, a press release announcing the danger of not securing your iPod headphones? Just think, if someone held on to the end of your headphone cable they could use it to follow you from several feet away EVEN IN THE DARK

/me is hoping Nokia and MS can get their &$?t together and come up with an alternative to Apple. Not that I would switch, but if I had to I'd rather go to another monolithic system than the fragmented mess that is the Android landscape

True, but M$ has already announced that nokia won't be it's only manufacturer, and vice versa, nokia is still pursuing other options as well. Personally, I think the HP/Palm has more potential to take on Apple as a unified system, but they don't have a good track record so far...

I'm not a fan of 3D movies (too gimicky) but they are different technologies with different results. With this app, cool as it is, you have to move in relation to the display to get any sort of depth. As far as I can tell, this would not work for any movies/games where the camera is moving. That, and there appears to be no "z axis" depth unless you're swinging your head back and forth.

As cheesy as it is in movies, at least you can sit still in your seat and have the paddleball fly into your face. This demo appears to be more like, "you can see the paddleball string if you tilt your head to the side".

True, if you hold your head perfectly still you won't get the 3D effect. But you never hold your head perfectly still (without conscious effort), and you hands will always be moving small amounts as well, so your head will almost always be moving relative to the face-tracking camera.

Now try going to a movie theater, and watching a 3D movie with your head held at any sort of significant angle off the vertical, say resting on the shoulder of your S.O.. It doesn't work at all then either. (You can get around that by using active [shutter] glasses, but then you're adding weight, expense, and battery life as concerns.)

    Well done Langer!

I think a wash-out will be a real disappointment. I can handle a draw in an earlier test but not a decider.

Core 2 Duos in the MacBook Pros!!! Come on you know you want to damnit....

    Hell yes!!!

With a better mobile graphics GPU, i.e.,
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 Series or
    GeForce Go 7900

    Larger optional hard drives:
offer the Seagate ST9160821A-RK 160 GB ATA-100 for mac laptops or Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160 GB

and here is the kicker: (optional)
    Blu-Ray Drive player/burner, with DVD+-R (dl) ability.

hey i know it would cost more, but apple is supposed to lead in terms of technology.

What? Its by far one of the biggest games of the year in the games industry regardless of platform. PC news sites are covering it too, as would any platform specific news site when the most important games are being released.

    Crazy.

    1. He doesn't know that Portal 2 is a new game released for all the OS's/Xbox360/PS3.

    2. Look at his post history; he is a foul mouth.

    Ignore.

That's some fast response Apple for the database cache non-issue!

Meanwhile Google is still tracking Fandroids in almost real time.

Yes. Because only a Fandroid uses an Android Phone. The iPhone is perfect for EVERY human being in the planet.

    Who needs choice?

I think it's going to take a non-publication company to do a digital publication right. What people would like to see? Sensible use of rich media, covering actual "new"s (as in new discoveries, scientific breakthroughs, developments in research, exploratory missions, etc), in a clean, legible layout, complete with error margins and references... possibly from a variety of outside sources or even open to firsthand submissions? Paid for largely or entirely by non-obnoxious/annoying ads & presented with a non-ad subscription option. Clean, minimalist comments & ratings sections, useful user profiles.

Just one digital publication done right, to set the example for all these publishers that can't figure out how to transition from print to digi.

There seem to be alot of interesting options as far as the live previews go (personally I like the animated thumbs idea, but perhaps on mouse-over only...this could even be implemented with audio files - previewing the start, middle and end in short bursts perhaps). Hopefully whatever is implemented will be customizable by users, especially those on older machines who may not have the graphics bandwidth to deal with the new innovations.

Bringing me to my question: has anyone personally seen how vista's live previews and 'flip' etc. are performing on older machines?

Well not too excited if it is like what it is described. Nothing sensational.

On the other hand, this could be achieved through MobileMe, easily. Just created apple script to copy data whenever new data is added. :|

OR Dropbox OR amazon disk. :|

I hope Apple does something different.

I know, probably wishful thinking, but it would be pretty sweet!

    I do.

What is the very first day of Spring 2007?

I say this is a case of UPOD.

Delivery of 10.5 1-07 with NEW HARDWARE!

Nuke Vista. Nuke other iTV competitor wannabees.
